I was expecting the apartment in NYC to be slightly smaller. I'm pleasantly surprised.

You can get a whole lot of house for $1,500 right here in the south east for that much.

That apartment is actually not bad for the price for the neighborhood its in. You can probably get a full 1BR apartment in some neighborhoods outside of Manhattan/north Brooklyn though.

I rather have a small apartment in a very urban location, than have a big house in the suburbs. Depends on the individual.

Actually seems like a deal for SF right now, too. It's very difficult to find anything under $2K unless it's teeny tiny (with shared kitchen/bath type of deal) or in an off location (Tenderloin, Bayview, or maybe way out in Outer Sunset).

This is a great article, thank you for posting this.

That view/apt in KC actually looked pretty cool.

I'm thinking that apartment in Kansas City is $1500 a month because it is a modern luxury apartment and you could find something much cheaper in a regular older building. I know that in Minneapolis you can pay $800 a month or $2000 a month for a similar sized 1br in the same neighborhood - one will be luxury and the other regular.

Iowa City actually has the highest rental rates in the state as well. You can get amazing deals, the cost of living is extremely low, yet the average wages end up being pretty decent. All adjusted you can live amazingly well on an average salary.

Des Moines was called the "richest metro area in the country" if you factor in the very cheap cost of living and the high wages due to it being a very white collar and corporate city.

If you have $500K you can get a 5 bedroom, 5 bathroom large 5,000 sf house with all the fixins

1150 S 46th St, West Des Moines, IA: Des Moines Real Estate, Houses: Iowa Realty S 46th St,West Des Moines,IA

For the average person you can get a great starter home, 4 bedroom, 2 bath new construction house for less than $150K

3737 Indianapolis Ave, Des Moines, IA: Des Moines Real Estate, Houses: Iowa Realty Indianapolis Ave,Des Moines,IA
