It all depends if you like the beach or the mountains more. I much prefer the mountains so Asheville would win for me. The people however, are a different story in both places.
Savannah easily...history, architecture, and layout is far more attractive and it's located along a river.
Asheville is located at the confluence of the Swannanoa and French Broad Rivers and has the highest concentration of art deco architecture in the South outside of Miami Beach. It's no slouch in that area. The location of Biltmore Estate in the 1890s really put Asheville on the map and it's the #1 tourist destination in NC.
Savannah has a slight edge for me, with international appeal and one of the best historic districts in the nation. The palm trees and Spanish moss, along with the historic row houses and squares makes it a beautiful setting. Savannah's history is much older and more well-known than Asheville's.
I guess it depends on which setting someone thinks is more beautiful - coastal or mountains. Both cities are gorgeous and are very historic.
Savannah. Asheville is quite nice--very scenic--but "beautiful" isn't the first word that comes to mind for me when I think of the city. On the other hand, Savannah's squares, extensive 18th and 19th century architecture, the mature oak tree canopy dripping with Spanish moss, and the palmetto trees all conjure up an image of beauty in a graceful, gentile Southern context in my mind that isn't easily matched.
Its beyond just topography. Its really the architecture and the physical layout. If Asheville was made like Savannah,I'd prefer Asheville
