Having recently been at both Put in Bay (which allows cars, but is predominantly bikes/golf karts) and Mackinac Island (which appeared to be exclusively bikes/foot traffic), I couldn't help but admire the type of charm that offered people for a vacation trip. My question was, what other towns (I know, The Villages) have that type of feel, if any, across the states? And also Canada I suppose!
Most college towns have decent public transit and a lot of biking/walking as a more common mode of transit, but there's still a high car usage in many of them.
True, that's a good point. Many do walk/bike in those. I suppose it would be difficult for it to be realistic here, save for vacation towns of the Mackinac/Put in Bay variety. I was just wondering if there were any equivalents to that in the Midwest or Other regions of the country. I'm guessing, but are Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket or Provincetown that way?

I was just going to reply with Nantucket before I even read this. It's not like Mackinac -- there are certainly plenty of cars there, and traffic can even be a bit rough "in town" and on certain streets during certain hours. But most people don't drive. Walking, cycling and taking the bus are very popular.
Nice. Yeah, I figured that Nantucket was that way. I'll have to check it out at some point. That's cool that it isn't dominant. Here's pictures of PIB's downtown, to give you an idea of what I'm talking about.
Bump. Any other cities that anyone knows of with a similar vibe? I understand that many probably see Mackinac or Put in Bay, as possibly charming, but also quirky in their absence of cars, so maybe those two stand alone. I'm guessing if there were any others, they would be some of the places I've mentioned on the East Coast, or somewhere else in the Upper Midwest or Canada.
I like Mooresville, NC. Population of 32K, I would say car is definitely the mode of transportation, but they have a very nice Downtown area for its size...and I guess that's what visitors would be checking out.
Key West FL and Provincetown MA are both pretty car independent. They are small enough that a car is not necessarily needed, and the promote other forms of transportation like bicycle and scooter rentals.
I think a lot of these kinds of smaller towns are vacation spots, no?
