Which is better for raising a family? I know in LA good school districts can be found but LAUSD is not good overall. I know nothing about the schools in and around Tampa. Specifically I'd be around St. Pete Florida. My salary in either place would put me in the middle class.

Thoughts comparing the two?

Cost of living is MUCH less in St. Pete, especially equivalent housing, not to mention no state income tax!
A salary of $110,000 in St. Petersburg, Florida should increase to $201,174 in Los Angeles, California

Are you saying $110,000 and $201,000 are middle class in the respective cities? If so, then I'm lower class.

Only offered as an illustration as to the disparity of one location vs the other. But so you know what is actually considered Middle class the following link has info:

LA is the better city, but Tampa is the better place to raise a family as a member of the middle class. That's impossible nowadays in LA, sadly.

Saw the NOVA sinkhole documentary on my local PBS station on Wednesday night. Florida was so nice when I visited Orlando about a year ago. But forgot about the geological foundation that supports Peninsular Florida is full of holes--sinkholes in the limestone. That's why there are lakes randomly scattered around Orlando as if it was in Minnesota with its 10,000 lakes.

Luckily Houston is not on karst, but San Antonio and Austin are. In that scene where the geologist was surveying in suburban Tampa with the divers, I was instantly transported to Natural Bridge Caverns that was underwater. I'm now thinking twice about relocating my family or a business to Florida and Central Texas.

Would rather live in L.A. hands down! Scenery and world class cultural and economic amenities can't be beat.

I'm leaning towards Tampa right now. My money can go further and I can actually be a homeowner there. In LA I'm a renter and will probably not own in the near future. I'm not too concerned about sinkholes. Yes, they happen, but so do earthquakes, and mudslides and fires, and hurricanes.

It definitely doesn't seem like the best place, but if you're middle class and raising a family, your money goes a lot further in Tampa. Definitely depends on income and lifestyle.
