Maybe not from a COL standpoint, but most are working toward massive increase in public transportation (reducing fossil fuel use) and other initiatives - Seattle no longer allows plastic grocery bags, straws, etc. Not groundbreaking but to save the planet we need larger cities to tackle these issues. I am still kind of shocked at how recycling is not as big of a priority in our large East Coast cities as it is on the West Coast. Bos-Wash is our largest population center and they don't seem as intent on environmental concerns. Most restaurants here required separating out your compost/recycling/trash - on the east coast I see one option: trash.
The key to sustainability is to stop relying on cars — build for walkability, public transit, and bikes instead, build higher density (no single family homes in cities), and more greenery wherever possible — even on top of buildings ex: green roofs (look at Singapore)

The top of these lists always look the same, liberal coastal cities taking the top spots.
What's more intriguing to me that are the larger cities towards the bottom of the list, many of them still booming in population. I wonder what they're going to do.
