Well, I think a lot of it is a distance thing. The West Coast is really far away and in my experience talking to other people here Nashville’s profile has not yet risen to the level of a New Orleans or an Austin in terms of being thought of as a multi-faceted destination city. It very much should be thought of that way and I’m sure it will get there soon enough. It’s clear Nashville is already getting its due from people in the Midwest and Northeast.

Hi Westsaeed,

I wasn't offended but curious. I didn't know the majority of San Diego nightlife was concentrated in Gas Lamp Square. I've never been to a city like that. I know Nashville, Dallas and most other cities I've lived in and visited have several areas where nightlife exists. Not to mention the neighborhood bars.

Some of it is distance.

I know many in St. Louis would mention party destinations in Chicago, Memphis, Miami and Vegas before mentioning Nashville.

In Memphis people would talk about partying in LoBro quite often. I've heard it is the same thing in Birmingham and Louisville.

San Diego has several nightlife areas. Hillcrest is a place I like because I'm gay, but there's also North Park, Old Town, Little Italy, Pacific Beach, and Ocean Beach. Gaslamp is the area with the heaviest concentration of nightclubs, but there are clubs in other areas I mentioned, along with a ton of bars and microbreweries. Microbreweries are a huge part of San Diego's bar scene, and I'm 99% sure there are way more here than Nashville or Dallas.

I personally don't like Gaslamp. I'm more of a bar person than a club person, and everything feels overpriced and way too touristy. A lot of times it feels like well over 50% of people are visitors. I prefer meeting local people that you can actually connect with. Even nearby Little Italy feels significantly less like touristy.

Nashville's nightlife is more centralized. Tons of people every week come here on Thursday and leave Sunday while more or less staying on Broadway the whole time going insane for their bachelorette parties. Coincidentally that's where most locals avoid. SD offers many more prominent neighborhoods than Nashville because they're more spread out. Hillcrest, Little Italy, the beach communities, Gaslamp, etc. Nashville has nice pockets of nightlife as well once you leave the Broadway stuff but it's not the same vibe as many other cities, which, depending on your preference can serve as a good thing. I've lived in both so that's my observation. Dallas I honestly know very little about.

This. San Diego is just SO much bigger. And to mjt, people in Louisville are much more likely to go to Chicago or FL to get away than Nashville. Not sure about Birmingham but a guy I know in the Ham is more likely to go to FL or Atlanta than Nashville. Nashville does have some regional draw though, but all cities in the OH and TN river valleys trade weekends with each other to an extent.

I think what people love about Nashville is 75% of their nightlife is downtown, and this is what tourists see. So to a casual observer, especially a group of guys, they may be impressed with al the beautiful southern blondes trolling about on bachelorette parties in dt Nashville but get outside that area and Nashville is very much no different than any other mid sized city. 12 South, East Nashville and many other highly heralded neighborhoods are exactly no different than their counterparts in mid sized cities. They simply cannot compare to the size or scale of nightlife in metros 2-3 times its size.

I just don't see Nashville as that Mid sized any more as people try to make it out to be, it's plenty of Night life in other parts of the city,, it's definitely music city for sure. It's more Touristy Downtown/ So bro than any where else....
