College sports are good example of how Iowa is divided between Plains Midwest and Lakes Midwest. U of I, in Iowa City, has long been part of the Big 10, based in that traditional Midwest. Iowa State, in Ames, has long been part of the Big 8/12, based more on the Great Plains. The schools each have always been good fits in their respective groupings and highlight how the eastern third of Iowa and the western two thirds are kind of drawn different ways from a media, cultural, and geographical stand point.
No two public universities in the same state in power conferences have been in different conference from each other than Iowa and Iowa State (FSU and VT were not in major conferences until much later...UI and ISU were in different conferences from early in the 20th century
