Baltimore may be the smallest, but it pound for pound it seems to offer the most in terms of uniqueness compared to the others. Seeing the first Washington Monument, Star-Spangled Banner house, Fort McHenry, Babe Ruth's birthplace, Edgar Allen Poe's Grave, the first Catholic cathedral, the Eubie Blake museum, the pagoda in Patterson Park, and a game of duckpin bowling are other "unique in Baltimore" experiences. That's part of the reason why I still hope for a comeback due to its history.
I am sure every city has their unique things. Some unique things to do in Philadelphia:
1. A visit to the Mutter Museum. It's medical oddity museum that features several floors of weird things. It's the only place in the world to see a portion of Einstein's brain on display. It has a lot of other bizarrely unique displays.
2. Old City Philadelphia in general is unique and worth a visit because it's the only place where all the founding fathers lived and worked together at the same time for an extended period of time. Independence Hall, Congress Hall, Ben Franklin's grave, the Betsy Ross house, and the US mint are unique. Most coins in the US come from the Philadelphia mint.
3. The Shrine of Saint John Nuemann. I am pretty sure Philadelphia is one of the only cities in the world outside of the Vatican that has a canonized saint's mummified body on display to the public.
4. Franklin Field in University City is the oldest football stadium in the country. It's probably more famous for the Penn Relays which is the oldest and largest track and field event in the United States.
5. Go to the top of Philadelphia's city hall. It was the tallest building in the world from 1894-1908. It is still one of the largest masonry buildings ever constructed by man.
6. Wanamaker's Organ. Originally built in Los Angeles for the St. Louis world's fair, it remains the world's largest functional musical instrument. It was bought by John Wanamaker and brought to Philadelphia. President Taft came to Philadelphia once it was installed and dedicated the building. It is a Philadelphia tradition to this day to go to the store (it's a Macy's now) and see the lightshow and organ play at Christmas time.
7. Going on a guided mural arts tour! Philadelphia is known as the mural capital of the world. It has more publicly commissioned murals than any other city in the world. Most of the world's best street artists have come here at some time or another and done a mural.
8. Everyone is going to say Cheesesteaks, which is fine, but really that has become a thing you can get anywhere in the US. An actual unique Philadelphia cuisine is Snapper soup. It was a popular dish back in the day due to the area's abundance of snapping turtles. So I would say going to somewhere like the Olde Bar and having a bowl of it is something you couldn't do in the others.
8. This isn't completed yet, but the world's first arena solely dedicated to E-Sports is under construction in the stadium district.
9. The Amish! While they live out in the country side, they come into the city to sell their stuff. The Dutch Eating Place is a fantastic place for breakfast. Beiler's Bakery has top notch donuts. Miller's Pretzels are delicious. Sweet as fudge candy shoppe has the best gummy bears I have ever tasted. Get some locally made scrapple from Smucker's meats.
I am sure every city has their unique things. Some unique things to do in Philadelphia:
Great list, and we can't forget Eastern State Penitentiary! Very revolutionary for its time for its incarceration approach/philosophy and fascinating to visit. Added bonus is seeing where Al Capone was once imprisoned.
Cambridge has the World’s Only Curious George Store, and Somerville has the Museum of Bad Art. They are temporarily closed for renovations or relocating within the city, however.
