Savannah is cool and holds its own quite well against larger areas. But St Pete benefits from the resources and amenities of the entire region so I would definitely choose to live there.
St. Petersburgs' downtown is one of the best in Florida; tons of restaurants, bars, nightclubs...etc.. Both cities also have a last call of 3am, so I'd say when it comes to nightlife they're neck in neck..
Food I would give to Savannah, but every other metric I'd give to St. Petersburg...
Nightlife
Food
Quality of living
Safety
Entertainment
Natural beauty
Nightlife: Savannah
Food: Savannah
Quality of Life: St. Pete for city living, Savannah for suburban living.
Safety: St. Pete
Entertainment: St. Pete
Natural Beauty: Savannah
I love Savannah, but Tampa being next door and then Sarasota being down the road basically gives it to St Pete by default. There's water on 2 sides, and also a whole chain of beaches to choose from in St Pete, while Savannah is basically Tybee, or Hilton Head if you want to commute up there. And St Pete is safer and probably has a higher quality of living. Also, Sunshine > Talmadge. Savannah has more charm and natural beauty though, for the most part. I would say Savannah is a better destination city.
