In the city itself, Pittsburgh is not all that industrial feeling. it used to be moreso, be even back in the day (first half of 20th century), most of the heavy industry was in the river valleys surrounding the city, not in the city itself. But because of that, there were some big warehouse areas in the city which kind of gives it an industrial feel, along with tons of bridges, which tend to rust . you drive under them and that adds to the industrial feel.

It used to have lots of smog before pollution controls, so now there is basically none.

St. Louis has a very industrial feel. Big 19th century warehouses, rusty old rail trestles, smoke stacks scattered through the area, and working river a stones throw from the Arch. I would honestly say it feels way more industrial from the highway than driving the surface streets though.
