Then the battery on my camera died, and I walked the remaining two blocks to my apartment... made dinner... it was a good night
So, where can I find this in New Jersey?
+1. Cool pictures, but I can't rep you
The real question is: do they have parades there If not, then be prepared for 100 youtube videos....
Damn, you actually walked all the way down Geary? I had a hard enough time DRIVING the damn street.
Incidentally, if you kept walking down (for those not familiar with SF), you would have hit a Russian Orthodox cathedral and various Russian and Kazakh shops and the Russian district. The latter, for most people who aren't familiar with the ex-Soviet Union, look somewhat Oriental and can be easily confused with an East Asian until you hear them speak Russian and serve Halal food.
There was this cafe where I got some good pelmeni and piroshkis.
I think he wants us to call him, but he didn't leave a number
That was a fantastic post--I'm a bit surprised by the number of Korean shops/bars/etc. as I wasn't aware there was much of a Korean presence in SF. Neat.
Those sure are some typical whitebread suburbs @ 415s2K. I couldn't help but notice though that I was walking through the adjacent burbs over on this street called "Fillmore" which seemed to have a lot of jazz clubs... and soul food joints... and more jazz clubs... meh, must have been left over from way back when SF had a black population. It couldn't possibly have an established black community... this is San Francisco we're talking about for chissakes. I took some pics too... might as well post a couple.
... Black people? In San Francisco? Who woulda thunk. This is obviously a one-time occurence though... we'll be getting back to our scheduled programming of white and asian starbucks-sipping yuppies shortly.
^ hmm. I think I need to get my eyes checked... everybody knows that it's impossible to only see more than 5 black people at a time on a street in San Francisco, let alone every person. San Francisco must have chartered buses to Oakland and back or something.
^Finally! I was starting to think I was in Oakla- WHAT THE HELL? N-no... it can't be. Those SF whites and asians... are walking next to a black person? And they haven't spontaneously combusted? What in the hell is going on in the Fillmore...
... Let's pretend we didn't see that. Everybody knows that it's physically impossible for a black person to walk inside a Starbucks. Period. No exceptions.

Yeah, but I never took any pics of them... dagnabbit!

The next day, I did just that, and snapped a few dozen more pictures. I guess I could post those up, too!
Due to my Scandanavian/Sami/Chukchi roots, I am often mistaken for a Russian. Each time I go into one of those stores, someone starts speaking to me in Russian... at a few of them, there are some absolute babes of Kazakh descent behind the counter: tall Asians whose idea of a good date is cleaning your Kalashnikovs, shooting bears, and watching you lift things God damn it, I love San Francisco!

Oh yeah, there's one market... it's in the photos, I'll look and post the name... that have the best dolmas on the face of the earth. I normally am pretty "bleh" about dolmas as they're too salty, but these were amazing.
They also had a fridge full of crazy Eastern Bloc beer, and I got a bottle of 15% ABV brandywine. Yeeeeouch!

Too busy taking the 7 back and forth between neighborhoods in the greater NYC MSA to snap pictures to prove me wrong, no doubt
