Interesting stuff. Just at a glance, not a lot of big surprises. Though New Orleans and Atlanta being so high despite both being on the low end in terms of housing costs was one. Are more retirees moving to those places?

On the other end, it seems like younger home buyers are definitely taking advantage of the prices in Buffalo and Rochester. I know there has been an influx of people from NYC and the east coast moving into Cleveland in recent years. I imagine even more are staying in NYS (or eastern state) and going to those areas.

Also, you missed Pittsburgh, one I would like to see if it also is like Buffalo and Rochester.

^Pittsburgh is 38 & $89,351.

For Buffalo and Rochester, I also think some local college students are staying in those areas, as Buffalo has a growing startup scene(look up 43North) and Rochester has a history of smaller companies popping up from the talent that attended school there or worked at the bigger private companies(Kodak, Xerox, etc.) previously.

I’m definitely assuming retirees are skewing this at least somewhat. The bottom of the list is Florida, Florida, Arizona, Florida, Nevada, Arizona.

^ Yes. Upstate is more affordable and jobs pay decent. Lots of my friends in Upstate have bought homes. Ages 22-27

Thanks. So Pittsburgh is more on the Rochester/Buffalo end, which is what I expected.

It would be interesting to see how those numbers compared vs. median age in the respective metros (I'm assuming these are MSA numbers???)

For example, the Cleveland MSA's median age is 41, so having an average of 40 is slightly lower. Pittsburgh is around 42 in median age, so coming in at 38 here is four years younger; I'm assuming Buffalo is also in that same overall median range so it's getting even younger, 5-6 years, based on this.

Columbus, on the other hand, has a median age of 35 and it came in here at 38, so the people moving there are a little older. I'm guessing the same is true for Atlanta.

^@18 Montclair, no problem and it allowed for more explanation about Buffalo and Rochester.

ClevelandBrown, I’m assuming so for Buffalo and Rochester. Just looked and Buffalo is 40.8 and Rochester is 40.4. So, those buying are below the metro median ages for both.

I also mistakenly left out Indianapolis and Milwaukee so here they are too added to the list along with Pittsburgh. I remember looking all 3 of these up but somehow forgot to type the results on to my list--I must be becoming senile. Sorry...and thanks!
