Name equivalent U.S Cities for California Cities and why, no right or wrong answers, just state one or more reasons why they are equivalent OR similar. State the obvious but try to dig deeper as well. This may be interesting.

For example,
Houston for Los Angeles - Vast, spread-out

Baltimore for Sacramento - Very similar metro sizes, strong historical roots

Boston for San Francisco - Politics

Agree with Boston for SF --- tech, NIMBYs, history, weak nightlife

For LA I'd say Miami --- beaches, music/TV importance, status-oriented, large and influential Hispanic community, high residential density but not conventionally "urban" in many ways

SD: Norfolk/Virginia Beach?

Sacramento: Don't agree with Baltimore, maybe Columbus OH --- state capital, large metro, fast-growing, medium-sized urban core with a lot of suburbia in the city limits, seen as culturally "bland"

Eureka: Kingston NY?

Crescent City: Somewhere on the Upper Peninsula --- lighthouses, forests, fog, very remote-feeling

Dallas for SF Bay Area - Spread out, BART and DART

Milwaukee for Sacramento - River cities, midwest sensibility with traditionally democratic core inner city, NBA/sports team pride, similar size - City of Milwaukee larger than Sacto, but Metro of Sacramento is significantly larger than Milwaukee metro. Chicago's influence on Milwaukee; San Francisco's influence on Sacramento, each pair are 75-80 miles apart.

Oakland for Baltimore - San Francisco Bay and Chesapeake Bay, large black population

Phoenix for San Jose - Teach office parks, overalll bland architecture/bland skylines considering size and wealth of regions.

Ok, this is getting interesting. Is the Tamp Bay Area similar is size to the SF Bay Area or San Diego Bay Area? I'm talking beaches, and waterfront only, access to water, not the land area, nor population.

Also, Tampa Bay is more similar to San Diego than SF Bay simply because of the weather and water temp.

SF Bay is more like Boston Harbor or Seattle's Elliott Bay. In fact, SF Bay likely is the coldest overall with the least amount of warm weather access than either Boston or Seattle despite Boston's or Seattle's winters. The weather in the SF Bay(the Bay itself as if you were on a boat) is almost never warm nor hot. It's pretty much 98% cool to cold year round.

Baltimore for Oakland/Berkeley - Baltimore's John Hopkins University and the University of California, Berkeley. Both huge research medical/bio universities.

For those that don't know Oakland and Berkeley are continuous urban spaces, nothing really separates them, and their downtowns are just 5 miles apart.

Nashville for Sacramento - The Sacramento River in Sacramento. The Cumberland River in Nashville. Both rivers are of similar size and play a big part in their history and character of the city.

Also, Nashville and Sacramento are both capitals of their states. The Sacramento Metro is larger than Nashville Metro, but Nashville City is larger than Sacramento City.

Baltimore/Washington DC for Long Beach/Los Angeles - Baltimore is the same distance from DC as Long Beach is to Los Angeles. Baltimore is metro DC's seaport. Long Beach is obviously a huge seaport as well. The part of the larger LA metro that is Long Beach and surrounding cities are similar in population as Baltimore by itself. Both Long Beach and Baltimore have large black/AA populations.

Long beach does not really have a large AA population it's like 11-12%

Oakland=Brooklyn, NY

Oaklanders I’ve talked to hate this comparison. So do some here on C-D.

But the obvious similarities are impossible to ignore. Both are across a body of water and connected by bridge and subway to the larger central metro core. Both have seen a huge influx of folks priced out of Manhattan or San Francisco, respectively. Both are far more ethnically diverse than Manhattan or San Francisco, respectively.

Both have undergone wide swaths of gentrification, with expensive new upscale residences and rehabilitated older housing stock. Both have seen many of their poor pushed out, although the poorest parts of each are stubbornly unchanging high crime neighborhoods.

Both have sizable office districts downtown. Both have their own set of major cultural institutions. And both retain at least an aura of hipster bohemianism. Yes, architecturally they are very different. But if you like the vibe in one, you’ll probably like the vibe in the other.
