You should also specify where in each region you are talking about, since both are pretty large regions. Flagstaff in summer is pretty pleasant, as is say Asheville, NC. But generally, Phoenix's 41C days would start to really grate after awhile, then again some parts of the South have shocking humidity and heat indexes. I think the Southwest is still a bit worse, though. It can get humid in Arizona too, and the glaring sunshine.

But its so easy to escape the heat. While its 110 in Phoenix its usually like 80-85 in Flagstaff. Or you go up Greer, or any mountain range above 8,000 feet and its 75

That's true. If you were in the South you'd want to be somewhere in the Appalachians, but even there it's more very warm than cool.
