Providence wins. Cambridge shouldn’t count.

Explain why because New Haven nightlife is very active and Wooster Square is very nice

Im removing Cambridge/Revere/Brookline/Quincy Downtowns .. because they're intertwined with Boston.

1. Which one has better nightlife/bars: Rhode Island. Providence alone
2. Which one feel more urban and walkability: Providence None of these cities are sunbelt cities. But PVD is mini BOS
3. Transportation: Probably Connecticut
4
. Restaurants: Providence
5. Culture: Providence
6. Neighborhoods Providence
7. Best small stores within downtown area: Providence and Massachusetts towns. The suburbs in MA beat the cities in MA.
8. Foot traffic: Providence

Yeah pretty much, throw Newport in just for good measure and RI takes it.

While Providence wins Lowell actually likely has the best ability to live without a car. Not only does it have a major grocer near by but a bunch of smaller local Grocers/markets within like a 1/2 mile. As well as a small movie theatre. (Excluding Cambridge). Most Downtowns don’t really have every day stuff.

Hartford is by far the most economically vital of the Downtowns though. I think it’s at least double the employment base of any other downtown.

Cambridge doesn’t really have a downtown.

This isn’t science but:

Providence

Stamford
Hartford

Worcester
New Haven

I feel the need to throw in a mild plug for New Bedford. You’d never confuse it with Newport but the downtown/waterfront area has come a long way. The fast ferries to MVY and ACK generate a lot of traffic. There’s a new boutique hotel. It has a live music scene and a bar/restaurant scene. The Whaling Museum and surrounding cobblestone streets are attractive. The Zeiterion is a gem of a theatre for live events. It’s a failed city and you don’t have to go far to see the blight but it’s a viable downtown. Commuter rail to Boston is supposed to show up in 3 or 4 years and that makes it even more useable as an Islands transportation hub with further revitalization.
