I have not been to all the cities but I would have to say from my experience its a toss up between NYC and LA. I have to give it to NYC simply because they are easier to get to.

Stonewall is famous in NYC. My mom even lived on the same street as that bar as a kid in the 50s and remembers the riots. Because of Stonewall, I would say NY.

I can tell you from experience that the city that has suprisingly lame bars is San Francisco.

I'm partial to Chicago bars because theyre one of the few that are open to four or five and serve alcohol the entire time. But...NYC and LA are probably the best.

ehem ehem, as a mid 20s gay man, I feel my experience of the social debauchery known as the 'LGBT scene' can add some imput to this thread. My opinion is based on the consistant number of quality bars, clubs, social events, promotional events, attendance ect. So I feel NYC would win this thread. This is because New York (largest gay community listed) exceeds all of my requirements, but also extends this trend to all the different genders, races and subcultures of the gay world. Black, white, latino, gay, lesbian, trans, twink, bear, ballroom, leather, lipstick you name it. its in New York and it will be one of the best scenes in the country for sure. But not far behind I would include Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, Chicago, SF and Montreal.

Please note though, most the cities listed still have strong gay scenes. This is just simply the best of the best.

I thought Minneapolis and Seattle would be up there too. I've heard that Houston and Atlanta were pretty strong as well.

LA's gay scene sucks. It's a very poor imitation of what a real "scene" is like.

SF has a very lame club scene, I agree with a previous poster. Surprisingly lame, even.

It's between Manhattan and Chicago, and I can't honestly decide. Both scenes are extremely well-established, with their own cultures and clubs, stars and communities. Boystown is without question the best gayborhood in the USA; it's got that fun, flirty, playful vibe no one else matches. The gayborhoods of NYC have long been overrun with straight couples who are totally out for their #88 on the "stuff every white person likes" list.

That, and New Yorkers are so determined to look bored in an attempt to be cool. I'll take Chicago any day of the week.
