Big city taxes: Who pays what - Apr. 14, 2009

The rankings may surprise you.

As far as I can tell, the methodology is based on a family of three with 75k annual income. The taxes apparently are state and local taxes only.

As a Chicagoan, its interesting that although we have the highest sale tax rate (10.25%), we don't tax food very highly (2%), so we have lower sales tax burden than several other cities.

Very interesting considering the large amount of people in the northeast that complain about high taxes and wanting to move south to escape taxes (there are several southern cities on that list)

So would the income tax for NYC be the same as the city tax? Because it isn't cheap here. I take home about 1450 after taxes every 2 weeks, and about $70 of that is city tax.

All those property taxes are cheap too. The average property tax on Long Island is around 8000/yr.

Yeah, I think NYC's income tax is the epitome of a local tax. Most of the cities at the top in terms of income taxes (NYC, Philly, Detroit, Louisville, Portland) have a city income tax on top of state income taxes. As you can see, the income tax and property tax is on average quite a bit bigger than sales taxes.
