New York humor has a long tradition. Very fast and witty. Peopel are very fast to open their mouths and city's culture is all about humor. Not only Seinfeld, Pesci and thousands of other perfomers but on a daily basis New Yorker's like to joke with each other and are not afraid of making fun of themselves. It seems that being able to keep a distance to reality and to joke is sometimes the only way to cope with the stress of living in a big city. Sometimes you just walk into a random pizzeria in another part of the city and have an extremely funny exchange with the owner. That's New York. That's the culture here.

Just see the pics of the official City Of New York signs welcoming people to the boro of Brooklyn. What other city in America with a extremely large Jewish and Italian populations would put up signs announcing "Leaving Brooklyn: Oy Vey!" or "Fuhgeddaboudit" ??? Enjoy!

Don't think I've seen them in any other borough. Just going to/from the Verrazano bridge.

Oy Vey! is on Williamsburg Bridge. When I first saw it I laughed and then saw few Hassidic Jews walking near near by (Williamsburg is one the of the prime Hassidic Judaism centers in America) and realized how hillarous it is considering its location... Fuhgeddabodit is next to Verrazzano bridge in a traditionally Italian part of Brooklyn.
It always helps to have a sense of humor and distance to yourself and your city...
