It's really hard to say. My life was so different then, and I lived a long ways from where I am now, so my perception is much different. There are plusses and minuses as far as QoL, but I do feel that right now selfishness is at an all time high and morals are at an all time low.

I feel that the US was so much more of a laid back and less stressed out place back in 1990 as well
Interesting observation. To piggyback on that, everybody is more impersonal. I mean people actually PREFER to text message their friends rather than talk to them. And these are supposed to be their FRIENDS.
And everybody acts as if they HAVE to answer messages IMMEDIATELY, the crackberry HAS to be used every 4 minutes or it will explode or something. Or if they don't answer a text message within 1 minute their head will explode or something.
Nothing wrong with depending on technology like you might depend on your car to get you to work. But NOT dependency like you might depend on the crack pipe and you just about get the jitters and shakes if you don't take your hit soon.
...some of this cell phone/blackberry stuff is BEYOND ridiculous.
As far as some cities' progress (or lack of):
Boston--better
NYC--MUCH, MUCH better
DC-MUCH better
Chicago-better (natives claim that they avoided the plight of Detroit0
Baltimore-still needs considerable help.....
The cities are probably better in general, but I'm not so sure about the country. I like the Internet (in its current, sprawling form) a lot though, so I'm going to side with 2010.
The murder rate was a lot higher in 1990. We seem to forget this, but look back over magazine covers from that era. A lot of them had to do with crack babies, teen "superkillers," and so on.
Give me America WITH the internet, over America without it. That is the beauty of the web and the global busninesses on it. Nowadays, you can live in the middle of nowhere Alaska, and still order your books off Amazon, download ITunes, etc. You can be nostalgic for the good ole days all you want, but try giving up the internet (and obviously this site) for a year. I suspect it would drive you crazy.
