It was also their first year as a team, so there was a lot of excitement around the franchise and a big turnout for their inaugural season. I'm pretty sure that any brand new team playing in a larger-than-average sized stadium could pull off the same feat.
An asterisk because they had a large stadium filled with an excited fan base?

Believe whatever you want. New franchises typically do very well in their first season, after all, people in Nashville and Atlanta actually thought they could support NHL teams. Also, when your stadium is 25% larger than the next closest stadium, it's going to skew the stats a little bit don't you think? Lots of teams consistently sell-out their stadiums like the Red Sox and the Cubs, but their stadiums are MLB-sized not NFL-sized.

Remember back in 1998, when Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire were competing to break Roger Maris' single season home run record? If the Cubs had chosen to play that season at Soldier Field rather than Wrigley Field or if the Cardinals had chosen to play in the TWA Dome rather than at Busch Stadium, then we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

It is somewhat of a joke. Look who holds the all-time NBA attendance record; the freakin Minnesota Timberwolves!! They played their first season in front of crowds numbering well over 20,000 at Metrodome. Their largest crowd that year was over 49,000 and their record ended up 22-60.

I'd say this one is pretty even; both cities have "equal" pros and cons. I do like Pittsburgh's skyline better but the mountain backdrop of Denver is beautiful......slight edge to Pittsburgh, it is often over looked and under rated.

Maybe so, but the record is still the all-time attendace record... Every team had a first game at a first stadium at some point.

Maybe the record itself is pointless, but it's still a record and an asterisk is absurd. Leave those for athletes on steriods.

Isn't Pittsburgh near mountains too?

5 major sports?

Okay... Football (1); Baseball (2); Basketball (3); Hockey (4)

What's the fifth? Soccer? Lacrosse? Wrestling? What?

And doesn't Pittsburgh have all of those, except basketball...
Steelers, Pirates, Penguins, Riverhounds...

I'm not voting for Pitt here, I just don't get the sports argument. Everyone knows pitt is a huge sports town.

Denver = Basketball, Football, Baseball, Hockey, Soccer
Pittsburgh = Football, Baseball, Hockey

It's stupid to argue that Pittsburgh would be a bigger sports town than Denver.
