Medellin,Colombia was THE murder capital during the 1980's and early 1990's. This coincides with the crack epidemic. Actually, they're related because of Pablo Escobar. Medellin had about 500 murders a month during that time. Given the population was around 1,468,089 in 1985, that would be around 409 murders per 100,000 people. Today, the population has nearly doubled and the murder rate is around 16 murders per 100,000, less violent than many major cities in the USA. It went from the world murder capital to improving by leaps and bounds.

That is somewhere around 120-133 murders per 100,000.

Something like that. It's on the other side of the boarder of El Paso so it's kind of big deal because it's happening right on the US boarder.

And the irony is that El Paso has a lower murder rate than many major cities further away from the border.

Yeah I know. I'm not sure how El Paso has pulled that off but it sounds like their doing something right.

Maybe immigrants from South of the Border are causing as many murders as people might want you to believe.

year-to-date rates/100,000 (approx)

1. NO - was 64 last year, be surprised if it gets surpassed by Detroit
2. Detroit - 35 year to date
3. Baltimore - 30
4. St. Louis - 29
5. Cleveland - 23
6. DC - 20
7. Philly - 18

as a resident of #6, we've had exactly zero murders in the quarter of the city west of Rock Creek Park, my zip and the three zip codes to the north and west are all still at zero for 2009, east of Anacostia is still extremely rough, but few tourists ever see it or go there

As far as the last 20 years averaged would go, Detroit would probably have the highest murder rate.

Lately, though, it'd be New Orleans.
