I grew up in Madison and now live in Ann Arbor. I love both cities!
As to the comment above about Ann Arbor being part of greater Detroit: I don't want you to imagine that we are another Detroit suburb! We are separated from greater Detroit by many miles of farmland (we are more than 40 miles from the heart of Detroit). But it is nice that we have the major Detroit Airport near, and the Detroit Institute of Art to visit.
I play water polo, and get the chance year 'round at the lovely Huron High School pool. They host free drop-in every Sunday, and Ann Arbor Rec & Ed offers water polo classes once a week there.
