I think SF and LA are very comparable, and I would definitely argue (as it has been many a time) that SF is not "much more urban" than LA. My vote is LA as the most important city.
SF is more urban than L.A. SF is the second most dense big city in the country behind NYC. That is a fact. SF is more comparable to the borough of Manhattan being the urban core of the Bay Area whereas the surrounding cities of Oakland, Richmond, Berkeley and Vallejo would be likened to the outer boroughs.
You're absolutely right that entertainment should not be the reason why L.A. edges out SF and the greater Bay Area. A point worth making in this grand argument is that the well-known L.A. industries of Hollywood and TV are dying a horrible death while Silicon Valley isn't going anywhere. This is why the job market in SF/San Jose is much better than L.A. which ranks at the bottom of the list:

Let's not get in to the "SF is the 2nd densest" argument since it has been proven numerous times that there are like 3-4 other cities more dense LA being one of them within the same boundaries, also people don't think of SF when opening their laptop just like people don't think of North Carolina when they're flying, SF is under the shadow of LA now that is fact, no one from LA talks about SF while you guys up there always talking down on LA, that should say something about us being the dominant/principle city

Obviously you have to take that statistic with a grain of salt because it is all of LA's densest nabes combined without density killers, but it still is very, very, urban and not very far behind SF in that department.

Seriously? There are tons of blockbuster movies and huge TV shows... Doesn't matter that I don't usually like them, they are huge money makers. And, just so you know ARPANET was developed at UCLA, LA actually has a decent tech sector as well. Believe it or not, most folks in LA do not work in entertainment.

You think SF isn't world famous? Over a century and a half of evidence says otherwise:
- The Gold Rush (tons of foreigners took advatage, especially Chinese, Chileans, Mexicans, and Australians, as far as I know)
- the Golden Gate Bridge
- Alcatraz
- Cable Cars
- the napa and Sonoma wine country
- the 1906 earthquake and fire
- Chevron
- Bank of America
- Wells Fargo
- Bechtel
- Intel
- AMD/ATI
- Apple
- Yahoo
- Google
- Facebook
- Twitter
- Craigslist
- beatniks
- hippies/the summer of love
- gay rights
- burritos (seriously, you can sometimes find places attempting to do SF style burritos in some foreign countries)
- the Black Panthers were started here
- the church of Satan was founded here
- psychedelic and classic rock and thrash metal had huge scenes here, with well known names like santana, credence clearwater revival, and metallica (hip hop too, though its mosty underground and much less known, and we even had a big but short-lived jazz and blues scene in the 40s and 50s, that attracted tons of big names)
- Stanford (which also played a major part in the development of modern computers as well as the internet)
- UC Berkeley
- was a major shipbuilding center during WWII, and the mà in point of debarkation for soldiers and sailors in the Pacific during WWII
Thats off the top of my head, all well known stuff from SF and the Bay Area.
SF was already world famous when LA was nothing but a podunk town that barely anyone had heard of. Nowadays it's arguable that LA is more famous, for sure, but SF is a heavy hitter in that department as well.

California became world famous overnight because of the Gold Rush and San Francisco became world famous as a result of that gold rush and has remained world famous ever since.
I hope you didnt think the nickname "Golden State" came about as a result of anything that had to do with Los Angeles? Hahahahahahaha.
I agree that California would be famous with out LA and just SF, but that's because I think it would be famous no matter what, even if it was all just small towns. Either way, SF is pretty close to as world-famous as LA is right now, and has been famous for much longer, that is for sure.
In any event, all 3 are very relevant and world class in 2012. In fact when it comes to global internet traffic the West Coast of the United States is the most influential region on the face of the earth, by a very very very wide margin.
60 of the world's 100 top internet websites are based in the West Coast of the United States, including 9 of the Top 10

What a ridiculous argument considering that LA may influence the entire world!
much less a small relative unimportant city such as Seattle, in one way or another due its entertainment industry and lifestyle trends and regional economic muscle LA's reach is far and wide etc, what would make anyone think that Seatlle was not influenced unless it was located in another planet?
I know that Seattle is an isolated and provincial town, but I am 100% sure that trends thar started in LA have reached even such remote third cathegory cities such as Seattle.

Come on, no need for name calling. Yes, even Seattle is lucky enough to be graced by LA's influence. I don't know what we would do if we didn't know what the latest was with the Kardashians or couldn't catch the latest movie or Entertainment Tonight. It would be be false to argue that our little provincial city isn't at least a little influential in its own way. I'm sure no Angelino utilizes Microsoft software, sips a drink at Starbucks, orders groceries/books/music from Amazon, gets bulk goods at a Costco, flies Alaska Airlines, buys clothing at Nordstrom, uses a Nintendo or has a TMobile phone. Nope, we just keep to ourselves and watch out for our own here in the Northwest and our other third rate cities.
