I live in Phoenix, AZ and am trying to decide if I want to move to Denver or Portland. I love the outdoors lifestyle whether its skiing, hiking, rock-climbing, camping. I have always wanted to move to Portland, but i have recently started considering Denver. Although I believe I will absolutely love the green environment of Portland, I do not know if I will miss the sun. I also do not know if I would like the "hipster" vibe in Portland, coming from conservative AZ. I am worried that Denver may have a LA city layout, spread out with highways and too much cement. I am planning on visiting both cities this summer to get a feel of the city vibes.

Would you rather live in Denver or Portland? What are notable differences between the two cities?

Denver.

There is a lot of sprawl and concrete, but there are also the mountains, which provide respite from the sprawl. And, anyway, the sprawl is nothing like that of Los Angeles.

I'd suspect that Phoenix is closer in terms of culture to Denver than to Portland.

Denver will probably suit you more if you prefer sun. There is still a bit of a "hipster" vibe, it's not nowhere near that of Portland.

To me it would seem both cities would be perfect for the outdoors type. Both offer skiing, hiking, fishing...etc. My guess would be all that is closer to Portland.
