Oakland definitely..much more character and substance. Great weather, central bay area location, nice lake, good views, diverse population.

Cant stand Ft Lauderdale.

Oakland for me. Oakland has the big three professional sport franchises and more culture and character. It is located in the better metro IMHO. A quick day trip to many interesting places.

You can do day trips in FTL also. Orlando, Tampa, The Bahamas. Everything else you said I agree with though.

Does Fort Lauderdale count the Broward suburbs?

Oakland does have a lot of character, culture, nice older architecture, an urban environment, good restaurants, etc.. Outside of the high crime areas it's a fairly good city to live in imo but I personally don't spend much time there except to attend A's games. It's hard to compete with SF.

I'm a beach person. I've never been to FTL but have been to Miami and love the scenery, weather, and culture there. So I'd take FTL overall primarily for the beaches and weather.

Oakland, because their voting process I'm sure is better than anything in Broward County :P

No but seriously, Ft. Lauderdale only because of beaches. I'd have no problem living in Oakland but Ft. Lauderdale would get the edge because of the Oceanfront and river front!
