NH is a very good example of this as land conservation is emphasized much more than other parts of the country. The tourist economy is also another key why conservation is important.
Do tell! The tourist/ski industries are very big here. There's not a lot of mining going on here in CO any more; I'm not sure what other exploitation you are referring to.

The issue of second home developments that are widespread as opposed to the conservation of larger tracts of land. When developers are in charge things become more inherently explotative as opposed to greater community involvement in regard to development issues as well as conservation.

And there are no second homes in New Hampshire? Most of the land in CO is owned by the federal govt and cannot be developed.

Bummer that Hawaii isn't on the list. I would say that HI is at the top on being economically liberal. In fact Hawaii is probably the most socialist state in the entire U.S. Strong Unions, First state to have mandated health care(for all workers who work 20+ hours), very strong environmentally, and a very regulatory business climate. Hawaii would be in the middle socially leaning a little more towards the left.
