This Cavaliers team, barring additional injuries after the loss of Collin Sexton for the season, may produce some play-off buzz in the NBA. It's a very young team that should be even better in the second half of the season.

https://www.cleveland.com/cavs/2021/...rry-pluto.html

Consider Evan Mobley's rookie stats compared with those of LeBron James. Of course, Mobley played one year at USC, and he's a splinter in size compared to LeBron, but it's still an interesting compare. Mobley won't reach James' legend status, but he may emerge as an all-star caliber player eventually.

https://www.basketball-reference.com...jamesle01.html

Jarrett Allen is emerging as one of the better centers in Cavaliers history, especially given that he shares the front court with Mobley.

And compare Darius Garland's third season with that of Kyrie Irving, and in recent games Garland has been posting monstrous numbers.

https://www.basketball-reference.com...irvinky01.html

<<Garland scored 31 points, Allen added 17 points and 11 rebounds and rookie Evan Mobley had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Cavs, who were back at home after beating Dallas, Miami and Washington. It was the first time since 1975 that the Cavs won three straight on the road over teams with winning records.

Ricky Rubio and Laurie Markkanen also are exciting players.

I knew we improved with the off-season moves, but I had no idea the Cavs would be this good. The lynchpin is rookie draftee: Evan Mobley, who no one could predict this kid's maturity, mobility, coolness and absolute defensive dominance. This season is big fun!

They played competitively against virtually everyone. That 5 game losing street after Mobley and a couple others went out and then they played Boston, Brooklyn twice, Golden State and Phoenix... that was tough luck. Even still, they were very tight in those games, even down crucial players. Since then they took it to the Wizards, Heat, and Bulls and lost to Utah by 1. They have had the toughest schedule so far in the entire NBA by opponent total winning percentage.

Not good enough to get out of the first round of the playoffs.

Let's revisit this post in May.

Yes, during that 5 game losing streak, during one period, we lost our entire front line: Markkanen (and Love on the bench) to COVID protocols, Mobley to a (Thank God) minor elbow injury and Allen to a nasty flu bug... and, oh, by the way, we played Boston, Brooklyn, Golden State and Phoenix, which had won 12-straight at the time... And despite that, the Cavs were competitive well into the 4th quarter (and with Phoenix, into the final minute) in each of those games. The Cavs have only really been semi-blown out in 1 game: The NBA Finalist Suns near the end of that grueling early West Coast swing. Statistically, based on this year's records of our opponents, the Cavs have had the most difficult schedule in the NBA, and yet we sit at 15 and 12, holding down the no. 6 playoff spot in the Eastern Conference... If you statistically weigh our current record with our strength of schedule, we may be in the top 3 or 4 in the East.

I think this team is going to get better the more they play together. I was a tough loss to have their best scorer go down for the season but a lot of the role players seem to be stepping up. Even Kevin Love is finally playing well, which may be a first for him since Lebron left. With all their length, they are very good defensively in the paint...that's going to keep them competitive. Ricky Rubio also was a very good signing from the looks of it. I really like how well he handles the point when he comes in. Not a great shooter or scorer, but he really sets his teammates up well and the ball really moves when he's in there.
I'm finally beginning to buy in on this team and am actually starting to watch them again...after the last several years of just god awful basketball that was no fun at all to watch.

Some observations about this team, reflecting after watching the Cavs score 45 points in the second quarter against the Kings yesterday.

1) We forget how good Kevin Love can be when healthy.

https://www.nba.com/news/cleveland-c...ts-1st-quarter

2) This summer, Ricky Rubio dropped 38 points on the U.S. Olympics team. He's an immensely talented, tough point guard.

https://ca.nba.com/news/tokyo-olympi...r1ue3p36xmjiyy

3) Jarret Allen is tied for second in the league in field goal percentage, shooting over 70 percent on the season! Among the five players making over 65 percent of their field goal attempts, Allen is the leader in points! Among those five players, he is first in assists and steals and second in blocked shots, offensive rebounds and defensive rebounds.

https://www.nba.com/stats/leaders/?S...PerMode=Totals

4) Darius Garland is tenth in the league in assists per game and 34th in points per game.

5) On the season, the Cavaliers are 10th in free throw percentage, very important in play-off basketball. Despite one of the top strengths of schedule and front court injuries earlier in the season, the Cavs are fifth in defensive rebounding and turnover differential.

https://www.espn.com/nba/stats/team/...owPct/dir/desc

https://www.espn.com/nba/stats/team/...overs/dir/desc

In coming weeks, as the Cavs play teams with lower winning percentages, individual and team statistics should improve against lesser talent. Despite injuries, the Cavaliers are ranked 10th in NBA power rankings, and this should improve in coming weeks. Note that the Cavs are 8th in strength of schedule played, far higher than all of the teams ranked higher in the power rankings except for the Suns.

http://powerrankingsguru.com/nba/tea...r-rankings.php

The next five games will be very indicative of the Cavaliers' play-off potential as they will face Miami (7th in power rankings), Milwaukee (4th), Atlanta (6th) and Boston (8th). The current roster reflects the Cavs' potential play-off team as all team leaders except Collin Sexton, out for the season, are relatively healthy.

I’m going to the game against Miami tomorrow. Haven’t been to the cavs since eastern conference finals 2016. Very excited to see these guys in action.

Been to 2 games this season: Cavs blow out of Detroit and, the next night, they squeeze by Boston. The crowd was large at the Rock and folks were pumped. The team had just completed that brutal West Coast swing where they amazingly ended up over .500... We were all only just beginning to realize this team may truly be special. And now Monday's matchup vs. Miami will be a battle for the 4-seed in the Eastern Conference... If someone had told you this past off-season the Cavs would be at this place 29 games into the season, you would have had them committed!
