The games could bring as many as 20,000 athletes and 250,000 spectators to downtown Cleveland and sites throughout the region. The Cleveland Synergy Foundation, which was formed in 2007 to help bring the 2014 event to Cleveland, estimates the economic impact of the Gay Games could top $60 million.
If this forecast (reported in the Crain's article cited above) is even close it is pretty hard to argue with the value of bringing the Games here. And good for the Gay Games for choosing Cleveland over either of the other two more "obvious" U.S. city choices.

I can see the need for a Special Olympics, but can someone please tell me what the justification is for a "Gay Games"?

Not that I'm against it or anything, and I am happy that Cleveland won the bid.

It's something that the GLBT community wanted to do. Why does there have to be a specific need for them? Truthfully, there really isn't a specific need for the Olympics either. It's purpose is to attempt to promote acceptance between different cultures and breakdown stereotypes through gaming and athletics. I would imagine that is what the founders of the "Gay Games" are going for as well.

Congrats Cleveland! You deserve to be recognized! I hope my homeland of Erie County can get involved with this; if nothing else, be a gracious host to spectators if/when they come for the touristy-stuff!

You should be proud. This is a great honor for Cleveland as it puts the city in the company of the likes of San Francisco, New York, Vancouver, Amsterdam, Sydney, and Chicago -- places which have previously hosted the Gay Games since they were founded in the 1980s. And Cologne will host the Games in 2010.

Clevelanders should be proud that their city will be counted among such world-class cities.

And not only will it bring much-needed money into the city, it's also an opportunity for Cleveland to showcase everything it has to offer -- to an international audience, no less.

This can only be good for Cleveland.
