The UFCW is partially the reason why the prices are high, just like the reason the UAW is why a freaking Chevy Cobalt is 17k new.
It is grossly unfair to compare these two unions. The UAW overreached beyond what any reasonable person would have known was a sustainable level of salary and benefits while the UFCW is still struggling to lift most of its members from poverty.

Apples and oranges.

I am not willing to shop in a nonunion store. Is Aldi's a union shop?

Aldi's and Trader Joe's are non-union, but they offer benefits for all full time employees. I have talked to people who work in both stores, and their main complaint was that it was hard work. They all admitted that no one was overworked, hard workers were promoted, and that the starting pay was higher than Wal-Mart but lower than Giant Eagle.
