I'm retired and my wife and I are thinking about moving in a year or 2. Can anyone tell us about Elizabeth City NC? What's the town like, what is there to do, how are house prices, any minor league baseball or other sports, is it pretty place, low crime/high crime, stuff like that? Would appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

wouldn't move here unless you enjoy going to Virginia for shopping, and cultural events. high humidity in the summer with the heat and the threat of hurricanes!! low paying jobs, too many taxes, low median income, housing prices going up. crime going up.

if retiring, people are nice, small town community feel. some growth, but kept in check by special interest groups (city council and the "old families").

please check out this:

it will give you a general idea of where the economic climate is here. no major or minor sports, just hight school or college. area is pretty. wouldn't swim in the river, ugh. Outer Banks is nice to visit. you can still get a lot of house for your money. high taxes though. IMO.

Default Elizabeth City

Elizabeth City is a very old city and has some sections that are very beautiful. Some old victorian style homes that can be bought some are in very good shape and some need to be restored. Other sections of EC are real bad. EC in some ways is like a small town and some ways like inner city Philly. What is pretty there is gorgeous and what is bad is real bad. It is cheaper than Currituck to move into but can be an aggravating place to live. I live in Moyock and I almost never go over there. I like the town but if I'm going shopping or anything I always go to VA which is about the same distance from me. I wouldn't mind living there but I wouldn't want to raise a family there. A retired couple might like it there if they require a slower pace if not you might like the OBX better.
There does seem to be a lot of crime in EC and there seems to be a lot of drug and alcohol addiction. I don't know the actual stats but I would bet it is a high average.
