Singletary Lake State Park has large-mouth bass fishing. Bring your own boat or take your luck from the piers. It is in Bladen County about 50 miles from Wilmington.

Lake Waccamaw is closer, but probably more crowded.

You could probably try the Cape Fear River if you do not plan to eat your catch.

How much of a safety hazard do alligators present in these coastal-plains lakes?

If you're smart, virtually none. Otherwise...

Death by gator is very rare. No recorded events in NC, but it has happened occasionally further south.

If you go a bit more into Columbus county there’s a few more spots:
Lake Waccamaw (plenty of catfish and crappie), Fair Bluff River Walk, Lumber River, Lake Tabor

I see plenty of people just pulled-off to the side along 74 between Whiteville, Lake Waccamaw, and Bolton and fishing in the creeks there.

Alligators at Lake Waccamaw won’t bother you.. if you approach them they usually run off before you can get close

"Death by gator is very rare" but people have been bitten by them.

Yes, they are plentiful.

We always tell people when going to the edge of water, to take a club with you and "shake" the grass growth 1st.

NEVER reach for you ball 1st.

A few years back 2 gators on dry land were fighting new the water, made it on ABC news.

A while back, man in Myrtle Beach reached in to get his ball and the gater grabbed his arm and drug him in, killing him.

Have seen many "sunbathing" on the edge of the water.

Death of humans by gator is very rare. However, a gator in Jacksonville managed to kill a German Shepherd dog. The wildlife people put down the 12-foot gator. It is stuffed in the Nature museum in Sneads Ferry. It certainly could have done major damage to a humans leg. It was lounging by a fresh-water creek near a walking trail.

Lake Waccamaw, White Lake and the Black River are within an easy commute if you live in Brunswick County.
