I'll be taking my Marine Biology class to the Beaufort, NC area next weekend and plan to take a ferry over to the Cape Lookout National Seashore.
Are we likely to find a greater diversity of coastal habitats and organisms on Shackleford Banks or Cape Lookout near the places where the ferry would drop us off?
Is it possible to be dropped off at the east end of Shackleford, closer to Cape Lookout, or only at the western end near Mullet Pond?
(We'll have a total of 12 people and very limited funds, so chartering a private boat isn't really an option.)

I don't have answers to your specific questions, but why don't you contact Cape Lookout Natl. Park and ask the experts there? Contact Us - Cape Lookout National Seashore (U.S. National Park Service)

Pretty sure you HAVE to charter a private ferry. Have you researched this very much beyond city-data?

List of Authorized Ferry Services - Cape Lookout National Seashore (U.S. National Park Service)

You might want to contact the folks at the Duke Marine Lab: Duke Marine Lab | Duke Environment or at the Rachel Carson Preserve: NCDENR - Rachel Carson, also. They may have good educational resources for you.
