I usually don't go to NC beaches, but my inlaws like to go to Emerald Isle Beach, I think near Morehead City/Carterett County. Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach, near Wilmington, are beaches a lot of people like to go to as well.
NC doesn't have a boardwalk or a beach that has a tremendous amount of amusments or entertainment, say like Myrtle Beach, SC. Wilmington is a decent sized city, about 10 miles from either Carolina or Wrightsville Beach, that has a riverfront area along the Cape Fear River as well as a lively, historic downtown. That's about as close as you're gonna get to a boardwalk in NC. If folks around here want a lot of entertainment while at the beach, they go to Myrtle. If you want to relax and get away for a while, just about any beach in NC is perfect for that.
