Hii
My fiance and myself are in our mid twenties andd looking to move to the eastern side of North Carolina, we are from Maine and would like to know which areas are the safest.

We are looking to rent in morehead city, beaufort, new bern or swansboro and was wondering about the safety and also things to do. We love to be by the water but also near a city for activities as well.

Any advice would help!!!!

Thank you!

You can check the Crime index at each city-data profile on the town, for example: http://www.city-data.com/city/Swansb...-Carolina.html . You can also use competitor sites to compare crime ratings (Google them).
I believe that Swansboro would have the lowest amount of crime, but you can check. New Bern is the largest town, and based on the TV news, it has a fair amount of hold-ups and gun violence.

You have to realize that if there is a fairly high crime rating for a small town, it is often related to seasonal things such as drunk-and-disorderly during the summer, or theft from un-occupied buildings during the winter. There is also quite a bit of drug-related arrests. I remember a recent meth-lab fire in Beaufort.

As far as things to do, you have access to all the water-related sports, paddle-boarding, boating, fishing from anywhere. Naturally the larger towns (Morehead and New Bern) will more year-round clubs or bars for entertainment.

If you are concerned about shopping, be aware that you will be going to Jacksonville anyway for major department store purchases. Further, Jacksonville has a fairly low crime rate, and it is not very far from the beach at Emerald Isle.

New Bern crime rates are close to zero. I mean serious crimes. The local police either give away speeding tickets or look for lost dogs. There is not much to do for them most of the time. The town consists mostly of old retired people and doesn't have much to offer to young people. Shopping is terrible. Morehead City would be better in many ways.

If you're a small town seafood type of person (Like the Maine seafood community) I highly recommend Swansboro. Low crime and a very nice, yet small tucked downtown waterfront with shrimp and crab boats as the back drop.

The area has a low density population even for summer time standards with visitors. Throughout a radius of about 50 miles you will find sandy beach's, golf, fishing, water sport's, plantation's, civil war history with forts, the best light houses, great restaurants, horse back riding, state/national parks, barrier islands, the outer banks....and so on.

The nice thing about Swansboro also, is that it's close enough to small/mid size cities/towns....Including the city of Jacksonville with tons of new restaurants and shopping which would be located on Western Blvd. on the Swansboro side of the county, Morehead City, New Bern, Havelock are all within a 30-45 minute drive of Swansboro. To the south about 1 hour away you have the major port of Wilmington, NC known for its movie making. 2-3 hours to the south of Swansboro (depending on how you drive) is Myrtle Beach, SC and 2 hours inland you have Raleigh and Fayetteville where the major entertainment like sports and big concerts would be located.

Good luck on your move.

New Bern does have a lot of crime, but it is generally in a couple of "bad areas" such as depressing public housing.

When we first moved here I tracked murders. At some point I quit, at Seven within one thousand yards of our home.

But all were across a main road and railroad yard. Other than the body found in the van at the park down the street, no really near issues.

New Bern puts you about 45 minutes from Greenville, MHC, and Jacksonville. We are two hors and fifteen minutes from Triangle Town Center in Raleigh.

We travel west a lot, living in New Bern has saved us a lot of travel time.
