Hi!

My husband and I are young retirees and are considering relocating to Moyock to help our son and his wife (two young children). Son works at military base in VA. Questions: 1. any health food stores in the area? 2. How often does Moyock flood? 3. average costs for utilities (especially during the a/c season)? 4. Do the mosquitoes carry a person away? 5. Are copperhead snakes quite prevalent? 6. Are termites a big problem?

I welcome any information that folks knowledgeable about Moyock have time to share. Thanks very much, PattiPea

Have you ever been there before? Where does your son live? I think he'd be in a better position to answer your questions.

For anything beyond basic shopping you'll have to go to Chesapeake. Snakes, bugs and flooding are all highly influenced by very localized conditions. Its difficult to make blanket statements about an entire area, even one as small as Moyock.

Some areas of Moyock are subject to flooding. The area is fast becoming a bedroom community for VB area. Your best bet is to contact the Currituck county chamber of commerce, or a realtor. Check out FEMA flood zone maps, or Currituck County maps....flood insurance can get expensive.

Thank you, Gemstone1 and BC1960 for your quick and helpful replies! So very kind. We have not visited Moyock yet but are trying to gather as much information virtually before a quick trip down in April. Our son lives on the border of Virginia Beach and Chesapeake after many years overseas in the military and now works for the Navy. We're trying to find a quieter place that is still within reasonable distance to help out taking care of our grandchildren. Our research to date has steered us to Moyock and Smithfield. I know nothing is better than visiting in person, but I am learning quite a bit from online research. Again, thank you both very much for your kind responses. Sending greetings from snowy Vermont! Pattipea.

Moyock isn't really a town, it's more of a community with a few fast food restaurants and small business. If you like country living, it's a great place. As previously mentioned, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach, VA are the nearest large cities for shopping and Health Food stores. It's about a 30-40 minute drive from Moyock. Elizabeth City, NC has some shopping and local restaurants, but no health food stores to my knowledge. That's about a 20 minutes drive from Moyock.

Suffolk, VA is a viable option, if you are looking for something outside the VB, Chesapeake area. That would be my choice if I wanted to move back up there close to family and friends in VB. From what I understand, many professionals from Norfolk, VB, and Chesapeake are moving into the Suffolk area to get away from the hustle & bustle plus, you get a little more bang for your buck.

Thank you, Stacey27520! Ironically, I started searching online in the Suffolk area just yesterday afternoon! Good minds thinking alike! Vermonters figure things out no matter what...and that's coming from a Flatlander who's lived in the NEK since '99.

Moyock will be fine to you. Being close to your kid is what will matter and you'll adjust as needed.

The whole Norfolk-VA Beach area is well worth exploring. I loved my time there. Enjoy the space. Take a walk on the VB boardwalk. Enjoy the restaurants and malls in the area. Most of the people responding thus far do not know VT. You'll do fine. Vermonters usually adjust to new scenery just fine. Enjoy!!
