I keep hearing of a remote island that is somewhere near Sunset Beach. Anyone know where it is?

kateyk12- so funny you asked this as we wondered about that too. This fall we were on Sunset Beach and I started a conversation with a couple of lovely, local folks. They explained that Sunset and Bird were once 2 separate Islands, separated by a tidal creek, that could only be crossed (on foot) at low tide. Sometime in the '90's that creek filled in due to hurricanes and dune grass growth.

The 2 islands are now one and we were having this conversation on Bird Island!!! Who knew

So, if you are on Sunset Beach start walking toward South Carolina and you will end up on Bird Island. There is a bird sanctuary there, tons of goats and deer. It is quite beautiful!

If your Mom in Law goes, tell her to look for the "Kindred Spirit" mailbox. Inside are pens, pencils and notebooks. People are encouraged to write their thoughts, prayers and Island observations. Very interesting reading!
