My son attended Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary School during the 2006-2007 academic year, and we were well pleased at this school. The faculty, staff, teachers, kids, and parents are all very friendly. Even the janitorial staff is very friendly (and better yet, they keep this school absolutely beautiful!).

The only reason we left Jessie Mae Monroe Elementary School was due to the transfer of my son's classroom (he's in a special classroom for autistic children) to Virginia Williamson Elementary School, about 20 miles north.

I don't have any experience with Union Elementary School, but I know some of the teachers and assistants who work there, and they are all very nice!

Over a year ago I moved here from NJ and currently have two children in Jessie Mae. I have been very pleased with the education provided at Jessie Mae. It is a close community and the parents are active in the school. My one child in in the G&T program and it doing very well. I have had no personal experience with the Union school but other parents have told me that they are very happy with it as well. The problem is the Shallotte middle school. It is a TERRIBLE school with no oversight and my other child has not gotten a good education there. Compared to other schools, a whole year was lost and my child is behind other children of the same age. I wish the Brunswick BOE would step in and make some serious changes in that school. But again someone at the BOE is asleep at the wheel. The education is subpar and there is too much nonesense in the school. Administration worries about politics and not the children. Needless to say, my child will be entering private school next year and I would advise any parent with a child entering middle school to say away from Shallotte. Hopefully, the new middle school with be open by the time you need it and they learn from the mistakes that were made in Shallotte. Anyway, I hope this helps.
