We are moving to Onslow Co one day. I am waffling on a whole house generator vs a portable generator or two.

My question is. How frequently through the year do you lose power.
How long is it usually out?

I had a quote of close to 10k for a whole house hookup with transfer switch. That is not including a whole house generator. I’m not sure I want to spend 15k or more for a whole house hookup.

What choices have you made?

We will be about 7 miles inland from the ICW.

Is it common to go 2 or more days without power?

Thank you

Our development has underground power, and we might lose power once a year. The worst experience was Hurricane Florence, when it was out about 18 hours. Other developments with above-ground power were out for several days. However, there were public shelters available. Since the hurricanes usually happen in September, I don't think it is worth trying to run the air-conditioning. A temperature of 90 degrees is tolerable.

Outages of more than 24 hours occasionally happen when a transformer goes out. You might ask your potential neighbors about the history.

Frankly, I do not think it is worth installing a whole house generator unless you have an invalid or baby. A partial generator running on propane or gasoline can run your refrigerator, a fan and router.

Portable Generator can be taken with you should you decide to move......or maybe loan out to someone if needed.
