Do you see many? Are they a problem?
Just curious? Are they in lakes, etc.?
Just doing my research!
Yes, they are abundant in lake and bays. They are not a problem unless you swim in their water. Do not leave small pets outside if they are near water. Gators sometimes travel over land between bodies of water. They have some protection in wildlife laws, so you have to notify the Fish and Game people if one is a danger to people.
We just attended a presentation about alligators here in southern Brunswick Co. given by this guy from fish and game. It was very informative. The one thing he said that was surprising was they do not relocate gators any more, apparently no matter where they take them they return to "their" pond. He explained that too many of them were being killed trying to make their way back.
Once they reach the length of 4 feet their diet consists mainly of turtles and other alligators. Gators are opportunistic eaters.
We have seen them on most of the golf courses we play on in Brunswick County.
Our botanical garden in Chatham County, GA has had one sleepy alligator in their pond for years. It never bothered anyone. Lo and behold, this year there are two alligators and some alligator babies. Not sure what the plan is.
Where I live in SC, people have been attacked....and even killed, by doing yard work, and walking their dog by the edges of lagoons. As long as you respect the gators, and stay away from bodies of water.....you will be fine. And yes, you can assume, every body of water, will have a gator in it.
If you own a dog, I would not walk him in the dark - alligators move at night from pond to pond and actually, they do that in the daytime, too. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. DO NOT FEED ALLIGATORS! They will return and then you have an alligator who is not afraid of humans and that can be fatal.
Do alligators range even up to the Northern-most stretches of the NC coast? According to the NC Wildlife department's website, it seems the answer is "almost but not quite": https://www.ncwildlife.org/Portals/0...2021Larger.png

Any insight from locals?
This is not personal experience, but alligators are reported to range into Virginia, especially the Great Dismal Swamp.
