relocating (Asheville, Greenville, New Bern: employment, university, live)

I have been thinking about relocating to North Carolina from New York. I am looking for a small city, large town - ideally within a one hour drive from the Ocean. A place that welcomes newcomers, has employment opportunities and near a college/university. I read about New Bern and wonder about that area and possibly Greenville. Any suggestions?

I live near Syracuse ny and we are planning our first trip to NC in April. I have loked at Edenton and Elizabeth City on the web. The western part near Asheville gets snow so Im staying clear of that area. I would like to be within an hr of the ocean but am afraid of hurricanes. Edenton seems nice. Let me know what you find.
