Looking back at some of the older money we used to have, like silver certificates, and comparing it to today's bills and coins, I have to wonder... why was the artwork so much more intricate back then than today? Just look at these bills from the late 1800's.
The best looking bill we have today most people don't even use, and I don't think the artwork holds a candle to the older notes (although the Declaration of Independence is of historical significance, at least, and not just a picture of a building or monument).
I think the artwork was so intricate in an attempt to deter counterfeiters. With today's 'security features' on currency, I think the artwork took a lower profile.
