A local resident was getting rid of a set of speakers. They looked in good condition so I brought them home. Connected them and they work well.

Did some research and these are KLH T-312 speakers. According to the research I did, they have 12" woofers and 12" passive radiator. It looks like two 12" woofers to me. I am curious if it is that or one is really a passive radiator.

Here is a photo:

A design like that is effectively a simple bass reflex with an out of spec and disconnected speaker stuck in.

It is intended to look like a second speaker. As for effectiveness? I'll leave that for others to debate. After about age 25 to 30, it doesn't make much difference to most people.

For free, I can't see how you did poorly. Do they sound good with the music you like?

Well, it is was a bass relax it would have a port somewhere. I don't see any. My guess is someone removed the passive radiator (which was usually on the bottom) and put another 12" woofer.

Good point. Free.

The specs say bass response as low as 20-22 Hz; the other speakers I had was down to 35 Hz. Speakers do sound good for the music I like (1950s-1970s).

If you like the sound, that is all that really matters.

The passive radiator doesn't need a port. It's used instead of a port. Some details here https://www.css-audio.com/single-pos...ter-than-ports

Yes, bass reflex has a port and passive radiator does not. These speakers have no port.

in an enclosed system the woofer more than any other driver has to move and displace a large amount of air, quickly. normally they are ported (just a stupid hole, a certain diameter and tube depth that is figured by a simple equation you can get from 'parts express'

The radiator design however instead of pushing out air, lets the air push another cone so now it focuses the pulse outward and acts like a sort of low powered speaker but out of phase which serves to extend the note or sound bandwidth the main driver is putting out. makes it sound like the bass is deeper than it really is and since it operates on a time lage of moving air and not speed of light current, it phase shifts the notes...lower.

if you like the sound, you like the sound and that is all that matters in the end.

resist any temptation to replace it with a driver cuz then: series? it now takes twice as much power to produce the same dbs or parallel? now you have an effective impedance problem (its been halved) and since 80% or more of the amp power drives the lower freqs, this will stress the amp to the point of failure which may or may not come with the magic smoke. it will be bad and then you will pay me lot of money to rebuild it, IF I can still get the parts...
