what if you could give colleges a nifty nickname? (university, Texas, USC)

Cal, Carolina, Mizzou, Ole Miss, Vandy, VT, Cuse, Nova, Zona, K-State, Bama, Penn State, LSU, Wazoo, NC State, UVa, Wake

think of all those great nicknames that give identity and broaden the branding of universities.

What if you could come up with some of your own. What might they be? Can you think of a catchy nickname, based on the name of a school with that name being clipped or altered in some way. I'm thinking of (I give these just as as examples, not necessarily good ones):

Mississippi State: Misty
Colorado State: CoStat
Louisville: The Lou
Nevada: Vada
Texas Tech: Double T

We just say 'Tech', but that's really just Texans.

The rest of the country would call it "T-Tech", more than likely.

I remember seeing Louisville's jerseys a few years ago with 'Ville' below the neck opening.

I know that USC often refers to the Ducks as the 'Zeros' because we have zero national titles in football and we have an O on our helmet. Oregon State and UW have been known to call us the 'Ucks.'

I tend to call Oklahoma State "Okie State" as cheesy as that may sound, but I'm sure I'm not the only one. Apparently many Oklahomans call themselves "Okies" anyway so I guess it makes sense.

I don't know how Razorback/Aggie fans feel but I see Arkansas called "Arky" a lot on message boards and Texas A&M as "Tamu".

Nationally UNC is "Carolina, however in South Carolina USC is "Carolina" and UNC is simply UNC.

I guess Oregon State would have to be something like "Ore State" to make it stand out a little more from being just another OSU. Somehow I have a feeling someone has already done this but I don't know/hear enough about Oregon State to know.

Canes, you have loads of company on the Okie State thing. Although when it comes off spelled OK State, i think its pronunciation is pretty much the same thing.

I always pity the University of South Carolina when it comes to identity. What does the nation think:

• when its sees "Carolina", it thinks UNC

• when it sees "USC", it thinks Southern California.

So what can I offer (and, no, i'll admit it, it ain't much):

Scarolina.

and as for Oregon State, which you mentioned, how about "Orestat" (pronounced Or-e-stat)

On ESPN telecasts I think South Carolina is "SCAR". I've noticed that and "SC" on message boards.

It's actually kind of funny because U of South Carolina was founded in 1801 and U of Southern California was founded in 1880. But since obviously Southern Cal has more recognition, it's nationally known as "USC" even though South Carolina had it first. I can't speak for all of them but I know some South Carolina alumni and what I can gather, they really don't care about being "The other Carolina/USC", but there are times it does bother them a little, like last seasons football opener vs. UNC.
