and the reason for this is that arizona and ucla have developed a pretty intense rivalry since arizona joined the pac. and it would be a shame to limit that rivalry.

Yeah... I already had a Pac 12 school fan tell me the opposite of what you're telling me...

This would absolutely never happen- ever. The South would get the recruiting hotbeds of Southern California and Texas...and the North would get the pick of the all the scrawny kids from Oregon and Washington- haha...no.
No, it would be West- UCLA, USC, Stanford, CAL, Oregon, OSU, UW, Wazzu
East- UT, TT, OU, Okie State, Arizona, ASU, CU, Utah
It would be arranged that the western teams would get to play in Texas every 2 or so years and vice versa in Southern California. Zona would be a in a great position with repeated trips to Texas as well. And they need no help in basketball.
This would be a great conference. Now, if we could only convince Texas.

i disagree on the recruiting deal. a good recruiter can pull kids from just about anywhere. take mariota for instance, he was born in hawaii, and went to oregon for his college career. and arizona recruits a lot of hawaiians as well.
and like i say, the arizona/ucla rivalry is almost as big as the arizona/asu rivalry, which is why when the pac12 was split into two divisions, arizona and ucla were put in the same division.

As an Oregon fan I realize a good recruiter can pull kids from all over, but seriously, no way will the Northern teams go for that set-up. Regardless of good recruiters or not, distance is an issue and SoCal and Texas is deep in talent and every team in the Pac-12 tap into California for the majority of their recruits and would love to get more access/exposure in Texas. If Larry Scott even considered that, Stanford and Cal would swing their immense power into play and basically stop that alignment if they couldn't keep the annual rivalry with SC and UCLA. And I am positive the other northern schools would do everything in their power to prevent it.
The only equitable way to split things up would be the original Pac-8 and the Texas/Oklahoma+ Zona schools, and Utah and CU. That makes sense.
14 teams are a bad thing for college football, 16 would be even worse.
Stick with 12 team conferences.
Have 8 power conferences with 12 teams. 12 team playoff - 8 conference champions plus 4 at large bids. Top 4 teams get a bye in the first round of the playoffs. First two rounds take place at the higher seeds home stadium.

Each league could have some "affiliate" or "understudy" members. Like if an understudy team wins big, it would go to the conference's big bowl. Enough good seasons would warrant full membership. These partial members would play half or 3-quarter conference schedules, and their players would be eligible for all conference honors. They can schedule as an independent for the rest of the games. They could have a play-in game to the conference championship.
