Why? I mean, I am majoring in Accounting, I may finish in two years hopefully, but what good will it do if I can't find a job? Plus, I had to use loans(I only used the federal ones though).
I always wanted a job with the government when I graduate, but I don't know. I'm starting to think my college education is becoming more of a title rather than an accomplishment.
Well what would you be doing otherwise? I can't do my current job without a degree. The other jobs I had in IT-- wanted a degree but you could do the job without one. However, with all the competition- you need that edge.
At this point you are 1/2 way there might as well finish. Who knows what the market will be like in 2 yrs. BUT they can't take that degree away from you once you have earned it.
If you can find a job now without a degree go for it, then save your money to pay for your degree later...that way you have it and don't have any debt.
Look into cheaper schools if you must (just make sure transferring doesn't cost you more time and money) but if you drop out now you won't have the benefit of a degree (which will very likely cost you in the long-run) AND you'll have existing college debt to pay down. I don't see any benefit to dropping out, especially if you don't have a viable alternative -- like a an existing alternative career opportunity, perhaps one that pays well but doesn't require a degree -- in place. You could also look for a job and continue taking classes in the evening or on weekends. In any case, you have a lot to lose and not much to gain from dropping out this far into it. That doesn't mean you should pile on huge amounts of extra debt, though. Some loans, however, are reasonable and should be financially worth it in the long-run.
You can't do ANYTHING in accounting without at least a bachelors degree. You SHOULD become a CPA.
Here is the thing about jobs. It is never a sure thing that you will get a job. The job pool, however, is a lot larger to college grads than it is to those without a degree. Sure, you might never find a job even if you finish your degree, but having a degree means you at least have a chance at getting a nice office job working on the books of a corporation for $60k+ per year. If you drop out you will never even have a shot at that life.
You want a job with the govt. What steps are you taking to get there? Are you researching the accounting positions that they have in over the million govt branches? Are you looking at their student entry programs/internships? Are you willing to move to participate in them if they aren't in your area? Have you tried to seek out/network with accounting majors that are currently working for the govt? Have you researched your city or state's student entry programs, which may include accounting majors? And if you don't land a govt position after all that, what is your plan B? If you aren't willing to put in the effort above, then maybe your education will just be a title for you.
In the OP's case, it may very well make sense not to finish college. If one is not open to or aware of the benefits, then it probably will be a waste.
