Hi All, I need some advice!

What should I master in if I am interested in Marriage and Family counseling and school counseling? I know they are very different but that is my problem. Is there something I can master in to be eligible for both jobs. I need some advice!!! THANKS SO MUCH!!

Default In the same boat as Ellie10. Help!

I live in Calif., in the middle of contemplating a midlife career transition and am interested in counseling in a private practice (with as many opportunties for billing) and school counseling, together. I really do not know if I should pursue MFT, LPC, LCSW or another counseling licensure. I have a young child and maybe another on the way, so my goal is to work at a district with schedule benefits and also in private practice.

Bottom line: I'm done with my BS in Psych next summer 2011 and want to jump into a Masters. Which is the best masters to pursue with the end goal of district employment as a school counselor AND private practice/agencies/outsourced counseling opportunities.

Thanks in advance!!

I am doing the same thing. Everyone keeps saying that the MSW in more beneficial. I don't know, it just seems like this profession is not compensated for how much work and schooling they go through. I am very frustrated with what I am reading. I really wanted to pursue a master's but maybe it is not worth it.

A PhD/PsyD is the granddaddy of psychotherapy. With that degree, you can do anything.

If you're not interested in that, you need to check out your state's (or the state you want to live in's) regulations. I don't know anything about them, but I can tell you I saw a lot of MFTs offering individual psychotherapy in California. Here in Pennsylvania, I don't see such them being so prevalent.
