Well my college had a fantastic career office which I spent time in fixing my resume. We also had great job fairs where really big NYC based companies for our industry would come and search for employees (how I got my current position). The majority of my teachers where adjunct and still worked in the field, so that was a good connection to the working world. I did 4 internships so that's a big network there too.
For the record I did my 4 year BSBA in Marketing with a minor in fashion merch, then I did a 1 1/2 graduate program at a fashion school in New York. It was a great school to see on a resume, however I still did 2 internships and 12 credit hours in my last semester just to get ahead.
Thats how I got my professional life going. Are you asking about just part time work during college? I worked every summer and I got all my jobs by putting on a nice outfit and walking around the mall and asking for applications. I would go home and fill all of them out, then go back to the mall the next day and turn them in. Usually got 2 or 3 calls out of 10 or so resumes.
Look through your alumni network and your career center. Get a full list of alumni by what they do for a living (every college's career service office has one) and start cold calling people who do what you want to do and do 'informational interviews'. My alumni network was THE most valuable thing I gained from college.
Say "My name is xxxx and I am a current student at College xxxxx and I think what you do day to day is very interesting. Could I set up a time to discuss your career with you for 30 minutes?"
Everyone has an ego, so if you let a person talk about themselves for 30 minutes, then mention offhand you are looking for an internship at the end, they will (in my experience) bend over backwards to help you out.
Look around town. I got my college job while walking past a store that had a help wanted sign. Most retail/restaurant jobs don't ask for too much work history although they have become more picky nowadays.
If you are asking about working while you are a student, I assume your college has a student employment office that finds kids on campus jobs.
