Hi there : ) So I'm a bilingual child ed. major right now at CCNY. I graduated in 2009 from HS, though I doubt I will graduate by next May. Probably May 2014 will be it. Anyways, what struggles, if any, did you face in graduating in 4 years or in your ideal timeframe?
The only people I know of that didn't graduate on time with elementary ed are ones that changed their major late in the game, junior year. Most elementary ed majors I know could have graduated 1/2 a year early if they really pushed it.
My daughter majored in Spanish and got certified in el ed and sp ed. Completed all in 4 yrs including student teaching. She rook 18 credits every semester except her first. Very doable, but she had to be organized, etc. (We looked at it this way - if she had to go another semester that would have been an additional $20k for tuition and room and board, plus the loss of $33K of her first year teaching salary. So if she didn't finish in 4 years it would have cost her an additional $53K)!!!
I know several people that went to state U's that took 5 years. My daughter did it in four with a double major, but our family only pays for four years so that's an incentive!
