I am thinking of a complete career change. I have a BA in a high-tech arts field, but I want to go into a science field and I think Physical Therapy Assistant or Occupational therapy assistant is what I want to do. I'm 34 and will most likely be moving out of state to pursue this.
There are 2 types of colleges (they are both community colleges):
My first choice of schools was one of the 1st colleges in the nation to be accredited for this occupation and is somewhat selective in the candidates they take in. I will have to take pre-requisite courses and will have no idea if I'll make it in or not. It would be a big gamble to move there and not know for sure if I will get in next Fall semester, then have to wait another year to see if I get in. But it's in a place that I REALLY want to move to and if this falls through, my dream job is located in this city. Is it worth the gamble?
The other college accepts 100% of applicants that take the pre-req's. So I will be pretty much guaranteed to get into the program there, BUT it's in a city that I don't really want to move to. I would do it if I had to, but I don't want to.
Of course now that I write it down, it seems silly to even think about trying to get into the selective school, I should go for the one that takes everybody, right? Does anybody have any thoughts or experience with this? Should I call the 1st school and ask just how stringent their qualifications are? Does my already having a BA matter or not?
