A person can pick up a great laptop for under $500. You do not need to ever take it with you anywhere unless you want to cruise the internet during class, and if carrying five pounds is such a big deal, then you need to do it just to get in better shape.
Why can't you just get a regular laptop? If you're in more of a creative field, then I can see the advantage of having a MacBook. But if you aren't, just get something already loaded with windows.
I was a business major and used a gateway. When I graduated college and decided to take up photography, that is when I purchased my MacBook.
Steve Jobs was a genius, he convinced millions of hipsters to pay more money for a laptop so they wouldn't support a big corporation like Microsoft. lol

First, you absolutely do need to carry it everywhere. How can you take notes and do research in class if your laptop is somewhere else??
The idea of a light laptop is to make it feel like it's hardly there when you're not using it and there when you need it. Carrying around a brick when you're out and about all day gets really old. It's not about being in shape.
Clearly you aren't a fan of academics research, but UX research has shown that people like things to be lighter and more compact and these attributes add significant value to electronics. As a result, many items such as phones, cameras, and laptops are being designed to be less obtrusive when not in use. Dr. Corbett at CMU wrote an excellent piece on this several years ago. It was a research initiative funded by the NSF in collaboration with UPITT.

To you maybe, but maybe not to others. It all depends on what your goal is. MacBooks are have or are capable of a few things that Windows laptops are not. A person who wants a MacBook would find a Windows laptop overpriced since a Windows laptop probably doesn't support their end goal.
I would recommend a macbook over the macbook air only because many textbooks come with a cd with extras on them and macbook air does not come with a cd drive.
I would still get the macbook air or new macbook pros w/ retina over something with a cd drive. Or a Windows Ultrabook. You can always get a small external cd drive for use when you need it without having to add bulk to the laptop.

Macbooks are far more reliable than most PCs (strangely Asus is right up there with Apple) and the software is much cheaper. My top of the line Vaio was useless after 3 years. My macbook from the same year, took a $80 hard drive replacement (from 60gbs to 250) that I was able to do myself in 3 mins and is still faster than my brothers brand new dell.
Apples absolutely work better! And their lifespan is like centuries. If I could afford 1200$ o a MacBook I would go that route but I don't. Glad someone mentioned Asus, I've been looking at that all day could I use that instead of a laptop? It seems to have more than the iPad and is cheaper however is there a bill I need to pay since its an android tablet?? Sorry to sound so naive

Sorry, but Apples just work better.
Everything you just said is inaccurate. Sure, a $1299 Macbook is more reliable than a $500 Dell... but expecting otherwise is just ignorant. But a $1299 ThinkPad is significantly more reliable than a $1299 Macbook, has a waterproof keyboard, and meets military spec 8 requirements. You can drop it 2 stories and it will work. You can't say that about a MacBook. That's why ThinkPads are the standard business laptop.
There's no truth to Apples working better. You just need to know what you're buying. Some people overspend on Sony Vaios and HP elitebooks because they look pretty.... but they won't hold up to a ThinkPad.
